Unifi Protect Nvr

We recently received an alert that will impact all customers that have a Unifi Video NVR based CCTV system. If you have one of these devices then your ability to accessthe Unifi Video NVR from a remote location is being discontinued on 1st January 2021. Regrettably there is nothing we can do about this situation other than to provide you with information and to outline your options.

You are affected by this if you use any of these services:

  • Network Video Recorder Pro The Network Video Recorder Pro (UNVR Pro) is a business-grade network video recorder that provides data redundancy and long-term storage capabilities (up to 60 days of storage for 20 4K cameras or 60 1080p cameras).
  • Model: UVC-NVR-2TB Unifi NVR Unifi Network Video Recorder The UniFi NVR with 2TB HDD from Ubiquiti Networks is capable of managing and recording from up to 50 cameras. The NVR is plug-and-play and the setup wizard automatically detects cameras for quick setup. It features the Intel D2550 Processor and 4GB of RAM, as well as a preinstalled 2TB.
  • You have a UniFi Video NVR and access the footage / cameras from the UniFi Video app on your mobile device.
  • You have a UniFi Video NVR and access the footage / cameras from the “video.ui.com” web site.

What is the impact?

From 1st January 2021, the Unifi Video NVR will no longer be offered or supported, More specifically:

  • No software or hardware revisions will be released, including for web UI and mobile applications.
  • No customer support will be available.
  • No security updates will be released.
  • All cloud operations will be shut down and video.ui.com will no longer be accessible.

Does this mean my CCTV will stop working?

Unifi Nvr Software

This DOES NOT mean that your CCTV system or cameras will stop working. Your cameras will still continue to record as before and you will still be able to access the footage either from the local network or from a remote location if you have a VPN.

Will I be able to monitor my CCTV system from another location?

Not easily. The mobile app will stop working and so you will be unable to access the system from outside the network using the app. If you have a business VPN you will be able to monitor the system from a browser, typically from a PC or laptop.

What do I need to do now?

Nvr

The Unifi Video NVR is being replaced by the UniFi Protect NVR which is an upgraded version of the NVR. If you want to continue to have access to your system remotely then you should ask us to supply and install a new UniFi Protect NVR. The cost of this equipment is £275 + VAT plus hard disk costs* however we are offering a discount on this hardware to customers that have bought NVR’s within the last three years:

  • If you bought an NVR from us in 2020 we’ll give you an NVR at 75% discount (£68.75) and 20% discount on installation.
  • If you bought an NVR from us in 2019 we’ll give you an NVR at 50% discount (£137.50) and 15% discount on installation.
  • If you bought an NVR from us in 2018 we’ll give you an NVR at 25% discount (£206.25) and 10% discount on installation.
  • Any older NVR’s can be replaced at the full price of £275 plus installation.

*In addition to the NVR unit above you will need some disks to install in the unit. We can include a 1TB hard disk at an extra cost of £60. This gives you a system which is most similar to the current NVR, but we will be unable to guarantee performance for systems with more than a handful of cameras. Instead we recommend larger and faster 8TB hard disks designed specifically for surveillance applications. We are recommending the “WD Purple 8TB 3.5″ SATA III Surveillance Hard Drive” at a cost of £175 + VAT and you’ll need at least one of these but we recommend two and can have up to four installed. More disks will support more cameras, a longer recording history and an automatic RAID array when purchasing multiple disks. No discount is applicable on these disks.

Are my existing cameras compatible?

Most of the cameras we’ve supplied within the last five years will be compatible, this includes the UVC-G3-PRO, the UVC-G3-DOME and the UVC-G3-BULLET. Some customers that have systems older than five years old may have some legacy cameras which will not work.

THIS DISCOUNT OFFER APPLES TO EXISTING CUSTOMERS ONLY AND EXPIRES ON APRIL 30TH 2021

End of Life Details

Ubiquiti UniFi Video is End of Life as of Jan 2021 with support officially ending on 15th January 2021.

Ubiquiti have officially clarified what this entails in their announcement earlier in the year:

  • No software or hardware revisions will be released, including for web UI and mobile applications.
  • No customer support will be available.
  • No security updates.
  • All cloud operations will be shut down and video.ui.com will no longer be accessible.

There should be no issues with directly accessing your controller within the network via a web browser, but you may need to configure a VPN for remote access (for more information, please visit this help center article). Please consult your IT Provider if you are unsure what options are available to you for remotely accessing your network.

Cloud Access via video.ui.com will remain active until January 15th 2021 to coincide with the End of Support Date (This has been extended from the original January 1st 2021 End Date). Existing installs of Mobile Apps will continue to work but may require some reconfiguration to use a local account and to use a VPN.

Ubiquiti announced the End of Life of UniFi Video earlier in the year here.
